Is HPV Associated With Hand Squamous Cell Carcinoma?

Human papillomavirus (HPV) may be associated with the development of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), according to the results of a Chilean study published in Infectious Agents and Cancer. Specifically, Francisco Aguayo González, PhD, of the Universidad de Tarapacá, Arica, Chile, and colleagues detected beta (β)- and gamma (γ)-HPV in 25% of patients with hand SCC. The researchers stressed the importance of prevention strategies, such as vaccines, and future prospective studies to better understand the role of HPV in the development of this disease.

“Cutaneous SCC is a pathology that causes high morbidity in Chile and worldwide and places a great burden on health systems,” the investigators stated. “Further knowledge of the pathogenesis of [it] by HPV could provide new tools not only for its prevention, but also for its risk stratification and treatment. In addition, deeper knowledge of the importance of HPV in the oncogenesis of skin tumors could change the paradigm on the treatment of warts and their prognosis.”

A total of 52 patients from Santiago diagnosed with hand SCC were included in the observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study. β-HPV and γ-HPV were detected in tissue samples from 25% of the participants, and the most frequent carcinoma site was the dorsum of the hands (52.5%). The researchers reported that the most frequent genotypes observed were β-HPV 100 (38%) and γ-HPV 178 (15%). They added that γ-HPV 101, 162, HPV-mSK_016, HPV-mSK_083, HPV-mSK_213, and HPV-mSK249nr were also detected, noting that none of them were previously described in cutaneous SCC.
