Frequency of Cardiovascular Events in Patients With Lung Cancer

Patients with lung cancer seem to have a relatively high incidence of cardiovascular events in the first year after cancer diagnosis, according to a new study. However, Joshua Mitchell, MD, of Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, and colleagues, caution the findings as descriptive, as no direct comparisons among groups of patients with other types of cancer could be made. The study details were presented at the virtual 2020 American College of Cardiology (ACC) World Congress of Cardiology (Abstract 1000-15).

“Cancer types associated with increased cardiovascular events should factor into provider risk assessments and help stratify high-risk patients who may warrant greater clinical oversight,” the authors wrote.

The researchers analyzed the PharMetrics claims database records of 1,119,843 patients with cancer whose average age was 58 years. Their cancer types included lung, breast, prostate, kidney, colorectal, multiple myeloma, melanoma, leukemia, and lymphoma. About 99,000 patients had lung cancer, 351,000 had breast cancer, and 25,000 had multiple myeloma.

In the year after cancer diagnosis, 10% of patients with lung cancer had heart failure, 4% had an ischemic stroke, and 3.2% had an acute myocardial infarction. Of patients with multiple myeloma, 10.6% had heart failure, 2.3% had an ischemic stroke, and 2.3% had an acute myocardial infarction. Patients with breast cancer had lower rates in all three cardiac conditions: 2.6% had heart failure, 0.8% had ischemic stroke, and 0.6% had an acute myocardial infarction.
