Proportion of Never-Smoker NSCLC Patients at Three Diverse Institutions

A retrospective study based on data in registries from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Parkland Hospital, and Vanderbilt University suggests that overall, the proportion of never-smokers among patients diagnosed with NSCLC increased from 8.0% from 1990–1995 to 14.9% in 2011–2013 (P < .001). In contrast to NSCLC, the proportion of never-smokers among those with small cell lung cancer or those with squamous cell disease did not change. The authors concluded, “…this trend is unlikely due to changes in referral patterns and suggests that the actual incidence of lung cancer in never smokers is increasing.”
